The United States of America awards The Medal of Honor as its highest and most prestigious military decoration to recognize U.S. military service members who have distinguished themselves by acts of valor.
Five chaplains have earned the Medal of Honor.
All five are Catholic.

A brave Navy Chaplain who served in World War II. Medal of Honor awarded by President Truman in 1946. The USS O' Callahan is named in his honor.
A U.S. Army Chaplain who served in 199th Infantry Brigade in Viet Nam. Fr, Liteky became a vocal peace activist during Reagan Administration. Returned his Medal of Honor in protest of U.S. policies in Central America.
A U.S. Army Chaplain who served with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. In addition to the Medal of Honor Fr. Watters was also awarded the Air Medal and Bronze Star. He was killed in action in Viet Nam.
A Marine Chaplain killed in action giving last rites while serving "his Marines" in Viet Nam. A case for the Canonization of Fr. Capodanno officially opened on 19 May 2002.
The most decorated chaplain in U.S. Military history. Fr. Kapaun served in the Korean War. Named “Servant of God” by Pope John Paul II 1993.
Butch Gilbert is driven to share the stories of five Catholic chaplains, who as exemplars of valor and selfless love made great sacrifices in the face of tremendous and deadly peril. For their actions in battle, all were awarded the military’s highest award, the Medal of Honor, three posthumously.
Butch is a FedEx pilot. The genesis of this presentation happened on a layover. When researching, he discovered the stories of the service and sacrifice of the Catholic Chaplains that so inspired him. This fueled his passion to share his findings with others.
Butch speaks regularly for parish missions, men’s and women’s groups, conferences and retreats. His passion for the faith, his fidelity to the Church, and his dynamic presentation inspire listeners with the patriotic sagas of these extraordinary Catholic men.
